Robert Folger Thorne Papers: 1905-1988 bulk 1960-1985.

This collection documents the writings and activites of Dr. Robert Folger Thorne. It contains correspondence, field notes, flora and fauna lists from various locations (mostly California), drafts of manuscripts, some slides and negatives, published reports containing Thorne's annotations, plant society documents, and documents regarding Thorne's work as a teacher at Claremont Graduate University. It is not a complete collection as much of Dr. Thorne's belongings are still held by him. It came to the archives in a very disordered state with very little original order. Any original order found was maintained and noted in the finding aid.

Dr. Robert F. Thorne was born on July 13, 1920 in Spring Lake, New Jersey. He was educated through high school in Gulfport and St. Petersburg, Florida. He attended Dartmouth College, where he received a B.A. in Botany in 1941. For graduate work, he attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and earned an M.S. degree in Economic Botany (1943) and a Ph. D. in Economic Botany with a minor in Geomorphology (1949).
